Stefania Stefani is full professor of Microbiology and head of the laboratory of Molecular Microbiology and Antibiotic Resistance (MMAR) of the above mentioned department at the University of Catania, Italy. She has a good experience as principal investigator of Projects funded by National or International Grant Agencies; she is supervisor of PhD students, Postdoctoral fellows and Research students since 1990; she is author of 80 papers in peer-reviewed journals. Research experience The laboratory of Molecular Microbiology and Antibiotic Resistance (MMAR) at the Dept of Microbiological and Gynaecological Sciences – University of Catania – is one of the institutions in Italy in the field of surveillance of antibiotic resistant pathogens – above all – Gram-positive (staphylococci and Streptococci). In the Lab of Prof Stefani, research is performed on mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, molecular epidemiology of resistance strains, characterization of mobile elements carrying resistance genes and involvement of agr in the regulation of biofilm production in staphylococci. Specific skills Molecular microbiology and molecular typing, bacterial gene expression, in vitro studies on the antibacterial activity of new drugs, mechanism of resistance to antimicrobials, biofilm studies.
