Conference Aims and Scopes

The Symposium is the fifth of a series started in 1989 and it aims to offer a common forum to researchers and scientists belonging to the communities of Atomic Physics and Radiation Effects in Matter characterized by the intensive use of Swift Heavy Ion Beams.
The spirit of the Symposium is to prompt interdisciplinary exchanges between researchers exploring all the aspects of ion-matter interaction in the electronic stopping regime in different areas like Atomic Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, etc.
The attention will be equally shared between fundamental and applied research, theory, modeling and experimental results.

Topics

Contributions are welcome on the following topics:

Conference format and Proceedings

The Conference Program will consist of Invited Lectures, Oral talks and Poster sessions. According to the well-established experience, the Symposium will be run in single plenary sessions. The time scheduling is planned in such a way that it will be possible in principle to profit of low price airplane tickets. A Welcome party as well as an Outing and a Conference Banquet will be offered to the Attendees.
An Abstract Booklet will be available to the participants. Full length papers will be published after peer review, as a special issue of Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section B (NIMB). Instructions to Authors will be dispatched together with the notification of the acceptance of the abstract. All articles should be submitted on the first day of the Conference (or date of arrival).

Abstract guidelines

Abstract must be received at the SHIM2002 Conference Secretariat not later than February 15, 2002. We strongly encourage you to submit your abstract before the relevant deadline.
Abstracts (Microsoft Word – Times New Roman font – 12 pts) can be sent as attached document by e-mail to the Conference Secretariat (SHIM2002@unict.it) or electronically submitted on the Abstract Submission page. Abstract body should not exceed 300 words.
Authors will be notified of acceptance and mode of presentation of their papers not later than March 1, 2002.

Venue and Accommodation

Taormina is a very famous site in Sicily full of charm and history (http://www.taormina.it). The Conference will be held on the sea side of the ensemble of Taormina-Giardini Naxos, in order to have a relatively quiet site for the conference, and to enjoy the many appeals of Taormina after the sessions. During the end of May, the weather is usually warm and like the beginning of summer. Swimming will be possible at the facility of the hotel and, for most courageous people, in the sea, which at that time is still relatively cold.
Taormina-Giardini Naxos are very close to Catania International Airport (about 32 km) which is connected to many European cities, including Frankfurt, Paris, Munich, Brussels, London, etc. Furthermore, regular connections via Rome (8 per day) and Milan (8 per day) ensure the connection to any other country in the world.
Some buses connect Taormina and Giardini Naxos directly with the Airport and, furthermore, there are a large number of buses and trains that reach them from the railway station from 6.00 am till 8.30 pm. The travel time is about 40 minutes.
A shuttle service from Airport to the Conference location will be organized for the participants on May 21 and at the end of the Conference (for details of timetable please check the Conference web page). Hotel accommodations have been arranged at reduced fares in the Naxos Beach Hotel (
http://www.atahotels.it/AlMare_e.htm and http://www.atahotels.it/congressi.htm) in Giardini Naxos, where the Conference will take place. The typical price for a bed and breakfast arrangement will be around 50-90 Euro per night. Meals can be taken in the Hotel at a price of about 30 Euro or otherwise in one of the many characteristic Sicilian restaurants around the place.
